8 Simple Steps to Improve Your Mental Health Today

Mental health tips for the working moms, Latina entrepreneurs, or stressed out moms

Mental health is an important aspect of overall well-being, and it's essential to take care of it just like you would with your physical health. Unfortunately, it can be easy to neglect your mental health, especially if you are busy or stressed. There is also still a level of stigma when discussing mental health with people often saying "you don't look depressed, you look fine". However, there are simple steps you can take to improve your mental health and promote overall well-being. My therapist once told me that a good rule of thumb to keep in mind is that when thinking about taking care of yourself, you want to make sure to cover the four pillars of wellness: emotional, physical, spiritually, and socially. Here are eight simple ways to help you take care of your mental health:

Tip #1 - Exercise regularly

Exercise has been shown to have numerous benefits for mental health, including reducing stress and anxiety, improving mood, and increasing self-esteem. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise a day, or try activities like yoga or tai chi that can also help reduce stress. Participating in some sort of physical activity doesn't have to be anything too intense though. It can be something as simple as having a good stretch and a 5 minute walk. Exercise can also be a great way to clear your mind and refocus your thoughts.

Tip #2 - Get enough sleep

Adequate sleep is essential for good mental health. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night, and establish a consistent bedtime routine to help you relax and fall asleep. This can include activities like reading a book, taking a warm bath, or practicing relaxation techniques. Make sure to create a sleep-friendly environment by keeping your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet, and avoid screens for at least an hour before bedtime. If you find yourself tossing and turning at night, it may also be a good idea to journal your worries away before bed to get them out of your mind or getting out of bed for a calming activity and then trying again.

Exercise can also be a great way to clear your mind and refocus on your thoughts.

Tip #3 - Eat a healthy diet

What you eat can have a big impact on your mental health and vice versa. Aim to eat a well-balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and limit your intake of processed and sugary foods. A healthy diet can help you maintain stable energy levels, reduce feelings of stress and anxiety, and improve your overall mood. However, don't stress yourself with pressuring yourself to follow an unrealistic diet. Set realistic expectations for yourself. Small changes add up to bigger progress.

Tip #4 - Practice mindfulness

Mindfulness involves paying attention to the present moment without judgment. It can help you better manage stress and improve your overall well-being. Try activities like meditation or deep breathing to help you practice mindfulness. You can also incorporate mindfulness into your daily routine by paying attention to your senses, such as by noticing the sights, sounds, and smells around you. Practicing mindfulness will be hard at the beginning. I encourage you to practice it daily to increase your comfort in stillness. If your worries begin to come back into your mind, refocus on your breathing.

Tip #5 - Connect with others

Social connections are important for mental health. Make an effort to spend time with friends and family, and consider joining a support group or club where you can connect with others who have similar interests. Having strong social connections can provide a sense of belonging, support, and connection, which can help improve mental health.

Tip #6 - Find ways to manage stress

Stress is a normal part of life, but chronic stress can have a negative impact on mental health. Find healthy ways to manage stress, such as through exercise, meditation, or talking to a therapist. You can also try stress-reducing techniques such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, or journaling to help you cope with stress.

Tip #7 - Practice self-care

Taking care of yourself is important for maintaining good mental health. Make time for activities you enjoy, get enough rest, and set boundaries to ensure that you have time for yourself. Self-care can include activities such as taking a relaxing bath, going for a walk, spending time with loved ones, listening to music, watching your favorite movie, getting a mani/pedi, or just lounging around for the day.

Tip #8 - Seek professional help if needed

If you're struggling with your mental health and are unable to find relief through self-care, it's important to seek professional help. A mental health professional can provide you with the support and treatment you need to improve your mental health. Don't be afraid to reach out for help if you need it. Remember that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Sometimes we need an outsiders perspective to really see things that we do not see.

Be patient with yourself

Improving your mental health is a journey! It's important to be patient with yourself and to seek support when needed. By incorporating these simple steps into your daily routine, you can take care of your mental health and improve your overall well-being.
